Gallery: Brick Books
International Study CentreStudents at the ISC are faced with a very real wall: one that stands between them and their mastery of the English language. Breaking through this wall will enable them to continue onto a Degree Course at Lancaster University. Their tutor, Dr. Sue Parkin, asked if I could work with them within the Walls Art Project to address this.
Sue asked the students to find "positive" words in English. The group of fifty found 200 such words and each chose a favorite. They then painted a brick white and printed their chosen word onto one side of the brick. On the other side of the brick they wrote the same word in their own language. This simple project took several days to complete and was enjoyed immensely by all.
I took the students' bricks and made them into the "Brick Books" you see on display.
